    Remington #5 Rolling Block

Thru some trading I have a Remington #5 Rolling Block in 7mm . Got the load dialed in pretty good but plan to in time replace to a tang sight . That little v notch it has got a little small for my eyes and the big thick front sight is no fun either . Has anyone made these improvements to their RB and if so what brand and model sight did you choose ? Measuring for a better front sight do you just measure the upper and lower gap on the dovetail and width ?

    Remington rolling block #5

I bought one that had been sporterized years ago and rebarreled it to 45-70. As I was shooting alot of black powder reloads with the heavy 500 gr lead bullets, I decided to make
a simple but effective tang sight, When the bullets hit the small three inch steel plate at 100 yards, I marked the sight and so on to 200 yards. I was also able to provide windage too.
I forgot to point out that the early 7x57mm rolling block chambers were not always up to the standard specs, the 7x57 mm chamber dimensions were standardized during WW1.
You might conside a caliber change

For the front sight , a dovetail scope block was installed with a M70 Win globe front sight with inserts.

What I would advise, is to buy a reproduction Lyman No 2 tang sight, like the original in my Win 1873 photo. You will need a gunsmith for installation. A good gunsmith should also be able to provide some choices for a front sight

I did a chamber cast cause heard of them being different . I have a 1893 Spanish Mauser in 7x57 to try compare the bullets . I got my reloads in 28/30000 range . My eyes are at the age were starting to let me know am getting older !!! I got a tang sight on my 1874 Sharps 45/70 and it helps greatly . Wanting to be sure order correct size to fit the dovetail .for front sight . The tang is pretty easy to figure out on way it goes on . Can do some work myself but not to proud to not take something to a gunsmith !!

    front sight photo

I used a Winchester M70 target front sight with different inserts. It is mounted on a small scope block.
