How can you tell if it's a Winny stock?

I was reading the CMP forum and somehow got the impression that you can tell if it's a Winchester stock from the shape of the sling well. Maybe I'm nuts (wife would agree) but that's my thought.

Assumming no cartouches, is this true?

Winchester stocks may have a W in the sling well but, this stock has a different shape opposite the handguard more of a square shape that a rounded one. Len

Most Winchester stocks have a tapered/angled left edge on the milling of the slingwell....



Some will have letters or numbers stamped inside the receiver area of the stock.....



All will have 3 holes in the bottom.....

I think everything you said is correct. The easiest way for me to tell a WRA stock is by the flat bottom of the forestock (that area in front of the trigger housing cut out). Also the grip area is usually thicker than other manufacturers.

Well not total success.

Everything you said is correct however WRA stocks are not the only ones that exhibit those features. So going by one of them alone is an easy way to mis-identify a stock. If a stock has all those features it chances are good it is a Winchester.

But if I had added the flat forearm......
I'd of been just about on the money.
I just sold a Rock Ola stock that had GD stamped inside the receiver area of the stock. First I've seen like that one.
Look at the posting about the numbers written inside a TN handguard I just found.

Maybe, maybe not. Some of the Marlin made stocks are just as flat as Winchester stocks. They also share a few more Winchester like features.

I can't see the picture because of the system I'm using so can't comment.
