can't mock the .303 mk VII????
From my understanding, the Mk VII is....
174gr, jacketed flat base pointed projectile
moving at 2,550 fps.
now, I have been a caster but in order to shoot in matches I can't use cast bullets. correct?
therefore, I would really like to hand load a mock up Mk. VII round but none of my reloading books show a recipe close enough to it.
the problems i have ran into....
1. I can not find a 174gr. pointed flat base projectile larger than 310.5
2. I can not find a load lower than the max load that will get it moving 2,550 fps. the closest is a max load using 41 grs. of Rx15 but its only moving 2,367 fps. and I really don't want to use max loads.
I am in dire need of help here so please inform me of any options I have to get where I need to be.
thanks,
three0three

2440 fps would be closer to Mk VII muzzle velocity. I've found Sierra 180gr sp bullets match trajectories out to 600yds. Quite accurate also! Most military loads except 30-06 and .30 M2 run pretty close to max usable pressures.

threeOthree, the velocity you have posted is about 110 fps faster than the usually posted MkVII specs that I have read. Thats no big diiference but now I bet you will probably find a few loads listed for around 2440 fps. I reload for my Enfields and have found that the best groups come from loads that are at or a little above the suggested start loads. Your brass lasts longer, less powder, and less wear on the rifle.

Generally, IMR 4064, its old school, but it shoots great. May have some new stuff that works well, too, but that's the standby. I don't remember charge weights, I don't even believe what's written down in my log books until they're triple checked against the manuals. In this case I'm pretty sure its the 2400fps load in the Sierra manual, but all my info is about 30miles away.

A load from one of my old books is a factory duplication load of 42.5 gr. of IMR 4895 with a 180 gr ( .311 diameter ) bullet for 2433 fps. and an accuracy load of 44.0 grs of IMR 4320 with 180 gr bullet for 2469 fps. I would suggest you get a new reloading manual to see if you can find any other good loads.

My usual is the Sierra recommended accuracy load. Brass life is fine IF its good brass- PM Edward Horton if you want scads of data!
