A technical query: How does it come about that the Colt marking is doubled-stamped? I have an Alfred Parker front sight for an Enfield that is also double-stamped. Does the die sometimes rebound in the stamping jig?

More like double rolled, as I believe Colt was roll marking slide markings in 1913.

Were the patent legend dies different from the Colt's address legend dies, or were they a one piece die? Reason I ask is... the Colt's is obviously double stamped (actually rolled), but the patents appear normal. Actually, the address line under Colt's also appears normal... I always thought these were one piece dies (combining both patent and address) so registration would not be an issue.

In my opinion.... nope. I think is a nice example! I looks like it was simply sent through the dies twice. The first (lighter) markings almost appear to fade out. The second marking is much deeper.

Beautiful, I own 40371. It however is no longer origional because some dumb a$$ had it made into a "hard ball" gun by the folks at SATU right after he bought it for $50 in 1970. The DA was me.
