T99 range report
Attachment 23979Attachment 23980Took my type 99, 23/21671 Kokura, w/mum, all matching including dustcover to the range. Ammo was gun show buy, formed from LC 69 30-06 brass. Took it to 50 yd range to see how high it was going to shoot. Literature says lowest slide setting is 300m. Battle peep, however is about a click lower than that. What is the battle peep range supposed to be ? To my surprise is was shooting to point of aim (6 o'clock hold). Consistant at 100 yds where I had to hold 8" high. The sights do not look like they have been messed with. What do I have, wimpy ammo ? Also the stock has a hole just above the magazine floorplate that goes through to the barrel. Does this have a function, drain ? Don't want to break the staking of the screws to see what is on the other end of that hole. Any insights would be appreciated.

Having to hold high at 100 yds surely is odd. "Normal" seems to require holding the front sight top about 8-12" below the aiming point. Could very well be the ammo. Graf's does internet sales of the Hornady 7,7mm Japanese
ammo- quality is excellent! Price is quite reasonable, considering the alternatives. Roughly US$25-28 a box.
I just wont shoot anybody's reloads in my weapons except my own. And I don't trust me! But at least if something does go wrong it'll be easy to know who to blame.

I'm like Jmoore, I would have to personally know the person to shoot someone else's reloads. That said I have a friend in Congress, AZ that reloads new brass in 7.7, 6.5 and 8MM Nambu that I would shoot. I got several hundered rounds of 8mm from him for a friend. If you are interested, email me and I send his address. His prices are reasonable considering others.

That is a drain hole and I would not take it apart if were me.

Nor would I! If the srcews haven't been disurbed this long, then leave 'em be. However, if you intend on shooting it extensively, and continue to have POI problems, then it'll be time to decide whether to leave this one alone, thus requiring a "new" rifle for range work, or to pull this one apart to investigate for bedding dramas.

Thanks
Thanks for the offer Riceone. Just before i read it I had located those calibers on the net and had ordered some, from three different locations. Want to shoot my nothing matches type 44 again and my all matching plus magazine, lousy finish, Nambu.

If ammo is slower fps underloaded it will ride the barrel up and shoot higher. Ammo that is loaded faster will shoot lower. Allso 150gr loaded to higher 2600 fps will shoot lower than a 170-180gr loaded 2400 fps will shoot higher.

The original ammo was gun show bought, formed on 30-06 caes, 150 grain bullet and 44 grains of some kind of powder. I got some Norma 174 grain bullet with 60 grains of röksvagt krut ( smokeless gunpowder) and a stated MV of 2500fps. Shoots low about the same. Going to a show tomorrow and will try to find some of the cheap stuff, the Norma is way too expensive to spray around the countryside, until I get this figured out. In order to check out the operator I unloaded a 1918 SMLE with 36 year old POF
ammo at the target. Just point and shoot and a hole appears in the black, boring.
