Am I noticing correctly that most seem to wear "boondockers" but a few polished service boots also seem present.

And a mixture of Garands and 1903s and maybe just maybe a gas trap or two.

There sure is a mixture of everything in this one. My great uncle went through there in 1919. Now THAT would be a pile of gear we would like to go through!

They have special ranges to fire both practice and live rifle grenades. On the M1903 and M1903A1, the rear sight leaf could be adjusted for use of the rifle grenade

It's a good deal more likely that recruit platoons were issued both rifles and withdrew the M1903 as new M1s became available. The caption states that the picture was taken at Parris Island in Nov. 1941. It's unlikely that a recruit platoon would have dedicated grenade launching rifles and grenadiers.
