I think that's a M1
Carbine, right? With a web sling?

Yeah, but which type and manufacturer?

I made the image as large as I could on my screen, and I just don't see the gas cylinder in front, and it seems, to me, to look like a M1
Carbine. But I could be wrong.
Any other thoughts?

The gas cylinder's silver. Look at the rear sight. The barrel of a carbine's long and skinny. This one's thick out to the front. The sling is leather, you can see the loop that joins the long and short parts at the bottom in front of his arm.

With no magazine, rear sight profile and the tell tale lower stock profile, it looks like it is a Garand
. Also, in a blow up you can just make out the gas cylinder with no finish on it.
