Late 03-A3
I was just reading that Remington ended production at about 4168800 before cancellation of contract ended "03‑A3" production 28 February 1944.
My favorite 03-A3 has a later Serial # than that, barrel date RA 4-'44. Finish, low MW and TE readings suggests that this was shot very little. I purchased this through the from CMP
about ten years ago.
I guess I got one of the last ones?
Anyone have any info on the late-production A3's? Or the last known ser#?

Actually, known Remington 1903A3 serial numbers go considerably highter ... into the 4,207,000 range IIRC.
The 4-44 barrel on your rifle is a replacement. The last "production" barrels were 12-43 and maybe 1-44 at the latest.

The last known serial number can only be an estimate. The attached link will take you to what is most likely the best list available. The explanatory notes at the end will describe how the list was created:

I have an earlier s/n Remington (3916XXX), but with a later barrel, 4-groove RA 7-44. Barrel probably resulting from its rebuild (Ogden?); ...OG-stamped on its original FJA-cartouched stock.
Not as good a shooter, though, as my 2-groove 11-43 SC.
