Is that opinion based on ballistics? I have a mini-14 and was concidering getting a 30 if for no other reason than I do not have a 7.62x39 platform and the ammo is cheap. PS dont know exactly why but I have no intrest in the AK SKS platform. I love my AR I was thinking the Mini 14/30 might be a way around the Califortified rules.

Maybe the newer ones are better, but the old Mini 30s make AKs look accurate. Most high cap. mags for it are poo. (The previous is based on the experience of many owners and a bunch of gun shop trade experiences from quite a few stores. The following is personal opinion-)

Ranch rifle sights- I think the M1icon carbine flip sight is better.

The new Mini 14s may be now as accurate as your average AR but it got heavy and isn't as visually attractive as the old ones.

Thanks! Love my SS GB model but accurate it is not. I do like the ergonomics vs the AR probably based on being newer the pistol grip configuration. The high cap/crap issue might be enough to push me towards another look at the AK.

FWIW, I've heard that the Mini-30 doesn't do well on a diet of steel cased ammo. Hard on extractors and firing pins or something like that. And if you buy the brass cases stuff, it's definitely more expensive than .223/5.56. I think the 7.62x39 is a good round and hits harder than the AR. But I don't know if it would make any more sense than the weapons he has. Would it be so much more affective on bear? Well maybe. But he says the bears are the least of his worries. Does kind of make you want to have an M-79 grenade launcher though. Eh?

Now the cats...... I think a 5.56 would deal with them, but I really wouldn't want to have to find out for sure. Hehehhehehe Hopefully you're getting "hazarduos duty" pay.

But I grew up in suburbia. And have a tenancy to worry too much. Hehehhehe Only mountains I've been by is driving on the interstate through Tennessee and Alabama.

What a informative bunch of posts.
A wheel gun was recommended. And a M1icon carbine was out dated. Let's see, a hundred and fifty year old concept vs. a sixty year old concept. A M1 carbine is not a pistol substitute but was todesigned to be more. To replace the pistol. More, Better. I maybe wrong, but I have not seen a semi-automatic pistol with factory installed 150 yd o 300 yd sights.
But it is not as good as a new AR type weapon.
My choice would be the AR and a Glock 34 with 13 rd mag in the gun and a pouch with two or four 33 rd mags.

the m1 carbine was original made to replace the pistol because it could shoot further, harder, and faster but ww2 came along and so the just issued the m1 carbine as one of the standerd issue rifles and i think thay made a great chose

I THINK I FOUND THE PROBLEM WITH THE AR-15

While it fired 59/60 rounds after the new gas rings and gas tube, that 1/60 bothered me. Well, when I broke it down to clean it, I found the roll pin that holds the rubber bumper in had drifted, protruded about 3/32"+ out of place. That alone could cause a problem with feeding.

That would explain why it functioned 100% before I switched the barrel to the M16A1 upper from the slick side SP1 upper. It had nothing to do with the switch, but rather the displaced roll pin. with the worn rings it significantly affected functioning. Replacing rings and gas tube overcame some of it, but not all. The difference in sound of the round may have been the bolt not opening all the way, rather than light load.

I would bet it will function 100% now.

I have been carrying the Inland on patrol the last week, but now that I have the function issue worked out, I will probably switch and carry the AR15 with a 20 rounder in it, and 5x 30 rounders in a Galati Intl. shoulder bag for reloads. While its not a sfe queen, and I plan of shooting the heck out of the "un-messed with" Inland a lot, I really hate to bang it around in the Jeep.

The buffer plug pin? Now that's weird.

(Not directly relevant: Usually the plug is nylon or similar. I have seen a few with a "rubber" plug, but they were badly degraded.)

First of all the M1icon carbine was not made to replace a pistol. Second it was planned for as the military knew back as early as 1939 that the US was going to be getting into a shooting war. That is why they pushed for the carbine to be developed and tested in the 1940/1941 time frame.

The carbine was meant for men who would have had to carry a pistol if the carbine had not been developed. The military designated the carbine as a light rifle and the same with the carbine ammo. If it was to replace the pistol then the contracts for the .45 Colt acp would have been cancelled and those funds directed to more carbine production. Both the carbine and the .45 had their places and one was not to replace the other.

I guess it is soft nylon. You are right, though, Jim. It is weird. In almost 40 years of using the AR15/M16icon platform, I have never seen it happen. I have seen them with roll pins that were too long and protruded from both sides, but not one drifting out.
