The Lend Lease Garand came today

I'm quite happy to be the new caretaker of this one. I think it's very nice. Seems to all be here. The private view mark looks like an FB to me(1955). I couldn't find any traces of red paint on the hand guard but in the picture you can see little flakes of red paint that ended up in weird placesThe bore is absolutely perfect and like a mirror and the parts have very little wear. This rifle was handled way more than it was shot. I won't be shooting it though.

    Is this another BNP stamp?

The cartouche is pretty nice but it looks like when the stock was carved out the cutters made a ripple effect along the side of the stock so it doesn't look in the pictures as nice as it is in the hand.

    Another proof mark.

    Follower is unmarked.

I do not know what this stamp on the bolt is.

    Checkered elevation knob.

    Knurled windage knob.

    A backwards L stamp.

Op rod catch is in the white.

    Follower arm, no bevels.

    Riveted short fork folower rod.

    Beveled lock.

    Milled band.

Trigger group. Note the finish on the hammer spring housing.

Very little wear on the lugs.

    Another BNP proof.

    Very little wear.

    Hardness mark?

    Very tight throat.

    Another proof.

Mark on the bottom of the bolt.

The gas cylinder has a "Z" and a "2" stamped on it.

Op rod is in great condition.

There is a what looks like a "D" stamped on the outside of the grasping part of the op rod.

Well what do you fellows think of her?

I did some checking around, would advise you to check you buttplate checkering with other pre war SA rifles. The early buttplates had a half round radius below the bottom screw and above the top screw on the checkering pattern. There are four checkering points undere the lower butt screw and the center two are cut in half on the pre war buttplates, I would say that you have a mid to late war buttplate with the square bottom under the bottom screw and top screw.

Also the top screw buttplate screw (until Dec 1941) had the narrow screw slot (.044 in) which was changed to .048 in because the screw driver blade on the takedown tool would not fit the early slot. All this can be corrected should you want to - most do not know anything about buttplates - but the early no-trap had the checkering pattern changed a number of times too.

Fantastic pictures! Man, I wish all the submissions to the GCAicon Journal looked like that.

You may want to check, but there may be a small ordnance bomb and flame right behind the stock ferrule, on the bottom.
