Yup, that's an M1. MP 40 above him...

Definitely an M1 and an MP40 in that picture. What is really interesting is the Brodie helmets and what appears to be a Battle Dress uniform on the middle bloke and the bloke with the M1 kitted out with an American cartridge belt. I'm wondering if they might have been French, or more likely Polish. Battle of Monte Cassino
