Springfield 1903 Sporter

I picked up a Springfield 1903 sporter recently and I know nothing about it . Its a beautiful rifle with a burl or tiger stripe stock. Will try to get some good pictures of it to post. The serial number is 1451615. I believe it was produced around 1934. Also the serial number is stamped inside the stock. Any info would be greatly appreciated..

The rear sight, I believe, is a Redfield and was not fitted on NRA Sporters; the bolt has been chromed or polished in a way that also wasn't done. Almost certainly a sporterized service M1903.

The bolt handle is straight, a feature of early M1903 rifles. So not original to this rifle.

Ray, someone put a lot of work and money into this gun. With the sight, chroming, and custom stock, it's not the run-of-the-mill sporterized version. Beautiful piece of tiger birch (at least that's what it looks like in the pic). The changes certainly appear to be the work of a quality gunsmith. I would not restore this gun to military specs -- keep it just the way it is. Nice find.

I would assume the chrome plating was originally done for a drill rifle which were sold off cheaply. Someone just took it, because it was at hand.
