Rifle is an 1888 SA Trapdoor serial #: 525855, with:
1892 cartouche,
“7” [Right side of stock] and “7” / “488” [Left side of stock]

Looking at numerous auction listings this rifle seems to be among many issued to NYSM units.

Yes, a rifle. 527848 went to 51st Iowa and everything on either side of that for a long way went to Co I 12th NY State vol inf.
