I think you are correct, this one sits much higher than my original and the bolt fouls on it. I intend to shape it or maybe find another.

Ok will do. Too bad I cant use this one... But I agree, it already looks too thin and my idea would thin it further.

Abandoning the original yet sanded butt, I pulled out an L stamped NOS walnut one and fit it today.
Looks much better already, and where I want the cheek riser to sit the bolt clears so I think this is the ticket.

When the stock bolt is tightened up, there should be a gap the width of a hacksaw blade between the butt shoulder and the steel butt socket. No gap and the butts were notorious for splitting downwards

    Thank u sir!

That bolt is as tight as can get it and there is a definite gap all the way around.

About the only thing I would have done prior to mounting the butt permanently would have been to give it the linseed oilicon/min turps mix fininsh much easier to do before it was mounted on the rifle looks the part now though has been an interesting thread

    Its not mounted yet.
Im going to put a finish on that butt before proceeding.
Made a trade for cheek riser screws that are enroute also and i would like to get the riser holes squared away before the finish is applied.

Whens its done I'm hoping it looks like the one up on the sites banner.
I rememberwhen I first joined here I dreamed of owning a rifle just like that one!!

    Hey guys,

    Making progress here!

Got the cheek piece fit nicely (its beefy and I may shave it down a bit but the bolt clears so it works for now) and the bolt headspaced perfectly on a #2 bolt head. The head fit very well to the bolt body also with only a degree or two of over travel so, getting closer!

Next is permanently fixing the pads to the receiver and fitting the handguards.

Ill post up some pictures it of tonight in its aesthetically completed state. (I know, I should have taken the pics but working on it made me late for work so I had no time!!)

    Jon

Hopefully its acceptable, the butt came out a lighter shade so I will eventually need to match it, and you can see how much larger the repro cheek riser is.
