Ben Gazzara a WWII vet?

But seriously, what's on the muzzle of that rifle?

I can't tell just what it is but is probably something to keep the snow out, observing the surroundings.
I don't think he was in WWII, without looking him up, because I seem to have seen him in some movies from the 50's where he was a teenager, or very young.
He could have been in Korea.
(ok, I'm going to go look him up)

That is a K-Ration box on the muzzle of the rifle. Common practice during inclement weather when rifle muzzle covers weren't available.

Mark-
It very well could be a D Ration box!! I had thought a K Ration box because those are a little bigger and will fit over the muzzle of an M1
. The D Ration box is quite a bit smaller than the K Ration box.
The box is at a bad angle - just not sure.

Frank, the other rifle looks like a Garand
as well. Look at the floor plate just forward of the trigger guard, it can just be made out. This photo has been colorized so nothing really looks right.
