$5 is a great score! Looks like it would bend easy though after several foot strikes on the blade to dig holes since it's not reinforced where the handle meets the shovelhead.

No idea what it is. Consensus seems to be that it is a civilian shovel as it is too light to be military but I can't say. It's as heavy as a US 1910 shovel blade and the handle is much heavier. I always considered them to be weak shovels. This one is pretty tough in comparison. What makes me think it's likely civilian is the angle of the blade. That makes it hard to lay flat for carrying. For $5, it was worth picking up in either case.

I have a garden job that's very similar here. Just a light duty shovel. Still, there were lots of times when we were digging in somewhere sandy or easy diggin' it would have been fine. Except the round handle so short would wear a blister in your palm...
