He loved those mules.
In the 50's I met a veteran who had served in Italy
with the mule borne artillery. He would still talk, at the drop of a hat, about how wonderful the mules were.

Tell the Alpini…
When they were taken out of line, we had to carry everything ourselves.
Not so easy to substitute those wonderful animals.
