I (rather stupidly) thought I would head off for a relaxing couple of hours shooting this afternoon... Hot as hell quite frankly, I thought it was odd that I am was the only one ... Well mad dogs and Englishman and all of that!
34c in the shade according to my phone, the rifle got too hot to handle and the sweat stung my eyes ... I just gave up in the end, not much fun, but the Tippmann Arms AR ran beautifully reliably as ever, only the operators sweat in the eyes ruining the groups!

I've had those days too. Fortunately not in the last few years...at least you were out there and could go home. Not like you had to hooch up in the edge of the treeline for some days...
Telling me Jim, I retreated back to my air conditioned LandRover, bounced back across the fields in a cloud of dust with a frosted glass (or three) of beer firmly in my sights....

If you could find a sub caliber adopter in 22 WMR for your 5,56mm chamber, you could try it out at different ranges. The 22 WMR is expensive and not alot of bullet choices but could be tested.
The normal semi auto 22 rim fire kit is alright and without a need for special rim fire, only the AR-15 match rifles with dedicated 22 match barrels will need testing of different match brands
photo shows 22 rf with 5,56 adopter, 32 acp (also 32 S&W) for 303 adopter and 32 ACP, 32 S&W short & long for 30-06 adopter
last photos show the CAR 15 stock that I restored and installed on a Colt SP1 semi auto from 1974
