The rifle Peter mentioned was a gift from my Uncle and my very first No.4T making it dear to my heart. It helped to create the monster. That derelict Mk.1 scope isn't a derelict anymore either, is it Peter? Many thanks for taking interest in it many years ago. Incidentally, that particular rifle has had four telescopes during it's service career and it's equipped with it's latest, (also matching), Mk.III! Now if we could only find the other two!! Thanks also to DRP who had it in his stash and was happy to sell it to me at a very fair price.

There's private and then there's "Super Secret Squirrel" private. Keeping things quiet until you publish or otherwise disseminate for best accuracy is well and good, to be applauded even, but I've known quite a few folk who have taken their wealth of knowledge to the grave w/ them, because they did not want others to have a leg up on 'em.

Myself, I don't have any expectations of making a living from all this, or even breaking even, so I don't mind sharing info. I do know when to keep my yap shut if it will hurt someone else's efforts, I hope!

Just wondering if it wouldn't be best for folk to at least let it be known that they ARE doing research, though...Might help things along.

Surveys like that can be a lot of hard work for no apparent return.
With my survey on the Lithgow Snipers, I try to avail myself and information to any who ask. I have well over 100 rifles/ scopes recorded as well as details on the characteristics of each. I offer to anyone who contributes their data to the survey, a rundown on the rifles in general (mostly put together from information available from several sources), as well as a report on their particular rifle including anything that may be unusual. I have found a few matches for miss matched rifles too. One that comes to mind is that of a collector who visits here- the original scope from one of his is in a back storeroom at the Australian War Memorial. (how I got info from there is another story)

I don't know if there's call for a book on how to legitimise a Lithgow No1 MkIII* HT or not, but it keeps me off the streets and I have saved some new buyers from being ripped off.

Hello Peter , I have 2 scopes , a HBM&Co Mk1 Sn 10144 ,and a WW Mk2 Sn 14727.
Both scopes were purchased from Lawrance Ordnance in Sydney a few years back when he imported a batch from the subcontinent ,both were in poor condition and were overhauled locally by Harry Geckle . The WW came with bracket No E34400.
I have one of the rifles he imported at the time , an M47c ,1944, Sn37814 .
The rifle came as a barreled receiver so no wood work or numbers on the wrist
I also have a scope case ( early style ) with "Rifle AS 7621" painted on the lid .
