Does anyone know what this is?

A little off subject here guys, but I know a lot of you can identify Antiques. I picked this up off of a trash pile about 25 yrs ago while working. It was in the vicintity of Southern Pacific Railyards Station. What I want to know is, is this an old railroad lantern or a Ship's Lantern. Every part on it is Brass except for the wooden handle. And it has a missing bracket on one side that goes to the handle. The wooden handle did not show up in my pics, and I'm too lazy to take another.
