My friend's Dad landed in Normandy on D-day ++ and when he returned to the US in the Fall of '45 with an NPM carbine had an adjustable sight added as well as a complete Quality Hardware trigger group. The type lll sight has only one stake. Another friend has a 6 digit Inland with checkered Inland safety, type 1 trigger housing pin and early mag catch with a type III Standard products hammer. At the time I examined it, I didn't check the staking but both carbines had type 1 barrel bands too so I believe both carbines were field upgraded.
We collectors really like the early featured carbines with flip sights and such but for a troop in the field, any improvement such as an adjustable sight, better hammer, etc were more of a priority. I would encourage any collector to think twice before replacing an adjustable sight on a carbine otherwise has early features as it might be destroying some of the history of that particular weapon.
