Ignore the open flap P-38 and other silly belt carried accoutrements. The second image is Rifleman J.J. Showers, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, while training in the U.K..

Judging by the size of the objective he's using some commandeered civilian pattern with about a 1.5" objective, and nickel plated to boot! No wonder it's wrapped in camo.

The other photo looks like it was taken at the same place and time as that famous series of Sgt. Marshall.
