I apologize for taking up the forum's time but I'm trying to learn something about an Enfield that was in a cousin's rather eclectic collection (he bought what caught-his-eye at gun shows).

My cousin passed away some time ago and I'm trying to help in deciding what's valuable enough to take time in disposing of instead of doing it quickly.

The Enfield in-question looks to have had at least two alterations since it was manufactured. The English markings on the receiver have been fairly heavily over-stamped with what looks to be Chinese characters (best I can figure) and the stock was cut-down ('sporterized') such that it no longer shows the classic military rifle outline (that's why it took me awhile to recognize that it should be looked at).

At first I thought that the rifle's scope mount was stuck on as an afterthought, as it's rather crude looking, but some on-line image searching has convinced me that the mount was probably original military. This mount is not the clean appearing ('stamped' appearing) style that I've seen several places but instead is a rather rough casting that consists of two inverted U-shaped pieces that are over the receiver - the rearmost required that a small rectangular piece of wood be removed from the stock so that a pad could be secured to the right side of the receiver.

The scope itself looks 'military' to my unschooled eyes but it's of U.S. manufacture and I think that it's probably fairly old and that the 'skinny pipe' outline caused me to originally think that it was a military scope (now I'm fairly sure that it was put on by some U.S. deer hunter a long time ago).

Does this description provide enough detail for someone to venture a guess as to what the Enfield is ?

Thanks.
