If the wooden grips were in good repair, the US Army left them in place through WW2 unless the blade was shortened to the later M1icon configuration or the bayonet was reworked to repair serious damage that took the bayonet out of service. Yours never went through this indignity in service and it would be a shame not to leave it as found to preserve it's history. As I said, the wooden grips stayed in service with the Army, Marines and/or Navy for as long as the bayonet was in good shape for service, not all were replaced.
gew8805, I was not aware of that, thank you for your advise.
I tought that wooden grips were replaced during WWII also on 16" bayonets before they were cut to 10".
This is the photo showing how one of the two grips has been repaired, unfortunatly not really a god repair I think.

I will keep the wooden grips even if my original intention was only to replace with plastic ones and to store the wooden grips safely.

I had found wooden grips in Franceicon but I wonder if they are original or just a reproduction.
