Many thanks, apparently cadets got very found of locking two rifles together using the bayonet, it is stored reversed in the rifle leaving one mounting sticking out that anotehr rifle coudl then be fitted too. Not havign a MAS i am not sure but the tale sounds good, possibly the hole was added to allow cleaning but the tale sounds better ;-)
