Stock cracks behind the rear guard screw are commonly seen in 1917 Military and Sporter stocks. What causes this? I am in the process of restocking a sporter and would appreciate input on ways of preventing this. Would it be advisable to remove a small amount of wood from behind the rear guard screw and the tip of the rear tang? The action is glass bedded with the front recoil lug making a good full contact with the stock. Any thoughts?
