War Dogs training, Camp Lejeune, ca. 1943
War dogs practice amphibious landings from a Higgins boat at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. This was one phase of the War Dogs intensive training prior to their deployment in the South Pacific.

Flagg, of Fairfield, Me., display a Japaneseicon banner taken from the enemy on Okinawa. “Boy” spotted an ambush while on patrol and suffered a leg wound in the ensuing action."

Private Alexander Boccardo and Doberman, ca. 1943
During World War II Marine Devil Dogs learned the art of war at the Marine War Dog Detachment Training School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. These dogs were specifically trained to accompany Marines in landing operations, for sentry duty, deliver messages, and as scouts. In this photo, Private Alexander A. Boccardo is show with his fighting partner, a Doberman Pincher.
