As I mentioned in some of my previous posts my father grew up in then the Dutch East Indies ( Indonesia now ). He recalls seeing Spitfires dog fighting over Djarkta. He lived near an Air Base there that was Japanesecontrolled. He said it was later captured by the "English". I have always thought he confused them with the Aussies as he recalled seeing Austens and Owen Sub-machine guns. Well anyways he told me once that during an Air Raid My Grand Pa and him ran to a Bomb shelter. They were locked out so they sat outside and watched Spitfires ( he called them ) and Zeros going at it. Maybe it was Typhoons I don't know. He said that belly tanks were dropped in a field and they were mistaken for bombs. They avoided those fields for weeks till they found out. He said all the people would wear rubber erasers on a string around their necks as mouth guards against bomb concussions . Two more tales to bore you with he recalls seeing a P-47 smoking coming in on a final approach and crashing. He recalls seeing the pilot sitting high in the cockpit ( probably to see over the nose ) before it went in. The other story was that B-25 / 24s were dropping supplies to the people. The Bomber was also hit and he saw a man jump from the waist position. The man had a "Streamer" and died , he had said to my Aunt " well he's dead " . My Aunt went ballistic yelling at him saying not to say that they are trying to save them. He told her he was too low anyways . My Dad passed back in '83 so I can't verify the Air Craft or who the "English" really were.
