I thought it was black paint mate. I had a number of rifles assembled 1940/41 all had what appeared to be painted barrels. Also all my 1935/36 barrels were painted.

Still, it's a nice looking rifle. The bit that intrigues me the most is the BA stamped charger guide.
Was this an unfinished action that the guide was attached to later?........not that I remember them being stamped in this position, but then I don't look at everything these days, let alone remember them all.

Muffer Ive never seen it on one of my rifles but I did have a charger guide years back that have never been fit onto a rifle and it had the BA stamp. Interesting.
