Good Morning. In an effort to keep it simple, I tried firing the Chassepot cartridges with no priming powder in the cap and with just a 1/4 of the cap filled with priming powder. The musket cap with no powder ignited but did not ignite the main charge. Switching to the 1/4 filled cap (FFFG), the ignition was 100%. I do have the same rate of ignition with a completely filled cap but had an issue develop there.

I found that I would need to fire 3-4 times to achieve ignition. It always fired but I could feel the needle having to burrow through the priming powder. When I switched to 1/4 the amount of priming powder, the priming powder falls below the level of the needle when I move the rifle to the firing position. Voila and the accuracy increases to a level that is almost impressive.

I believe I can now say that Randy and Chassepot are ready.
