Hello all. My main interest is in Britishrifles and their accoutrements, but just today I managed to acquire a Mauser K98 bayonet (without a scabbard) at a good price. Free. The bayonet has previously been a display item and the blade has been painted black, the handle metalwork has been polished, and then the whole thing has been given a nice thick coat of varnish. First job will be to remove the varnish and then carefully remove the black paint from the blade.
Other than the gaudy finish the weapon is in very good condition and has some marksings on it that I'm hoping the gurus on this board can identify.
The first is a serial number, 6818, and below that is a small, lower case "n".
On the other side there is the code "S.178G"
Can any of you identify the maker, and/or date it from the info given?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Now I need to see about getting a K98kto fit it to.
