Japanese Type 38 training rifle questions

I have a co worker who's grandfather was in the occupational forces after WW2 in Japan. He brought in this type 38 but it's not your normal 38. The bolt catch/release looks like this

The only marking on the rifle is a 4 digit serial number. So my thought are its a trainer/school rifle.
Anybody else ever see this type of bolt catch/release like this?
