IMR,
Would a thick O Ring work or thick black rubber washer you could shape as a Spacer?
Or.... Bad Idea ?

IDK if you seen this link below, but checkout the Sweet Job BAR did on this US Navy Mk 1.
If mine I'd consider doing the same.
What have you got to lose?
My gut tells me you won't be happy with the overall condition of your current set up.
The end gap, stamped numbers/name reversed and what appears to be the 2 handle halves not fitting together flush.
