WTF? moment

I have a very nice little 303 carbine that has been around the block here in cottage country. It has been used as a deer rifle for many generations. It was modified by Bubba and although the wood was hacked about, the mechanics and metalwork were in remarkably good condition with the rifle having no major issues. Matching bolt number to the receiver and a bright bore with sharp rifling. It has accompanied me on a few walks in the woods, it is a good shooter.

Over the years I gather parts as I go, until eventually, I will be in a position to do a full restoration on her. Just the other day I stumbled upon a listing for a nice butt stock for sale that was once on an 1898 cavalry carbine, same year as my project. I know the butt is from an 1898, because the cut stub of the carbine's metal butt socket was still attached to the butt with the stock bolt. When I saw it, I just had to buy it, just had to.


So this nice old butt fit up to the rifle just perfect and was a wood grain and colour match to a walnut fore arm that will be going into the assembly.

Beautiful old patina, no condition issues. Nice brass butt plate, crisp Canadian Militia & Defence markings with a stock disc marked to the 8th Princess Louis's Hussars. Perfect match for this Canadian 1898 cavalry carbine.

Yes, I knew that it was a cribbage board when I bought it. Form follows function and this is a very functional butt stock. I'm going to use it on the rifle as is, I actually like it, it makes me smile every time that I look at it.
Even more so, I am looking forward to seeing the reactions of other people when they see it.
