It was. Peter pointed out this little feature to me more years ago than I care to remember....!

It's a Faz made in August 1944. I presume the markings are on the receiver side wall below the rear sight bed (& just in front of the safety lever)?

Very early Faz rifles (1941/42ish) were stamped untidily on the butt socket like BSA Shirleys. Then they moved mid war to very shallow electric pencilling on the flat under the sight bed, & later still, certainly as typically found on post WW2 stuff, they moved the markings to further forward on the side wall, in the area between the ejector screw & the back of the receiver ring.
