One of my great uncles was WIA on Okinawa, serving with the Army's 96ID. He was originally in a "whiz-kid" type of Military Intelligence unit at the University of Wisconsin, being trained as a codebreaker and the like. However, about the time they reached California for debarkation, they were "converted" to an Infantry battalion. Sadly, they suffered horrible casualties, especially on Okinawa. I think less than 25% survived the war. Uncle Bill passed away in 2000.
