Just out of curiosity, I would cut the damaged part off, clean it up and make a crown. It would look something like a SMLE. Then I would go out and shoot it. Would be interesting to see how accurate it would be and how it would function. Gas port might have to be enlarged slightly; port pressure would be lower due to shorter section of the barrel after the gas port.
