    And the woodwork appears to be beech. To the best of my knowledge Savage only used their characteristically stained birch on their No4's (& allegedly some walnut on early rifles, though I've not come across any to date).

    To be fair, the rifle looks a reasonable example that has been through the mill somewhat, like most of them that saw some service. I'd give it house room, so long as it came at the right price!
