Hardly the most challenging of gunsmithing questions for many of those here but as a milsurp owner facing his first challenges in this area I hope you'll bear with me.

I just acquired a Canadianicon-marked No. 1 Mk.III* that came with some surface rust in spots. Most of it is minor and is responding well to the 0000 steel wool and gun oil treatment.

Here's the challenge. I bought the rifle having been told it was non-matching. Turns out it is a matching rifle. Unfortunately the worst patch of rust, significantly worse than anywhere else on the rifle, is on the bolt handle, specifically on the flat where the serial number is stamped (see the photo).

I don't think steel wool will do the trick here and I, of course, want to try to avoid eradicating the serial number. I'm open to suggestions...
