the plug at the bottom of the mag is there to limit 5 rds.
removing it is against the law.
and if you do , you will end up with a half inch hole in your mag.

OK i should have read th SKS facts first But there is still the 2 stamps i am unsure about the one on the stock looks like a square with the bottom missing. and the one below the star and tothe right of the diamond shaped one. Is this the double stamp that is rare or something else?? Only thing it didnt come with is the manual. Barrel looks to be original. Rifle is stamped 1950 but the gas block is angled does this mean it was replaced, i thought i read it was supposed to be squared? Everything else is as posted in the SKS facts for the year. Thanks again for any info you may have
Tony

I had a 1949 many years ago but it was also a rebuild. It was interesting to see another from that era that appears to have the date/insignia, etc looking almost hand-done compared to the later SKS. I've forgotten a lot of what I knew but I do remember that the 1949 had a spring for the firing pin. NIce rifle but rebuilt at least twice but still rare.
Enjoy!

i don't know if you know, but the arrow in the star is the manufacturer's stamp. your old girl is a Tula made rifle.

the unique features on a 1949 are the spike bayo, ringed top cover latch, square gas block and ofcos stock to match the spike bayo.
the russian switch these parts in early 1950 so some 1950 models may have some of these parts but i have yet to see one with all these features.

That really depends on your location. Here in the US the full 10 rounds is okay.
But I think you are correct for Canada...

This is by far not exhaustive, but 1949 production features include:
- square gas block
- 1949 on the receiver cover (duh!)
- squared, not angled, front sling mount
- arctic birch stock with only one serial number stamped into it, matching the receiver serial number
- looped rear cover latch lever
- non-chrome-lined bore.
- spring-loaded firing pin
- slightly different bolt and carrier lock-up design
- cruciform bayonet and stock inletted wider to accomodate, not narrow like on a blade bayo stock.
