K98 questions
What is the purpose of the metal button going through the butt stock?
Also I cleaned off the dark crud from the stock to find decent wood but with almost red staining through the grain?

if by "metal button" you mean the discs behind the sling hole, they're bolt take down discs. when the soldier was cleaning his rifle in the field, there's a step in removing the firing pin from the bolt that that is used for.
as far as the staining goes, what do you need to know? is it staining or is it just the color of the grain? pics would help.

It could be the glue between the plies of a laminated stock, its the most common color I've seen.

The 'red stain' is the glue for the laminated stock. I once wondered what this was too, and tried in every method to remove the "red stain", until I realized the glue used in ww2 was (usually) red.
