I'd check and see how much the stock was trimmed. An original steel buttplate could certainly be fitted. IMHO the rifle would present better with an original pattern buttplate, even if the pull were a bit short. The pad really stands out.
The asking price isn't all that much more than a decent pre-64 sells for. Restored, it would be a good representative specimen.
I would want a bit of a written statement about the uncle; provenance is always nice.
Incidentally, I don't know if these rifles were made for the Gov't. or just purchased from inventory.
