ACOG or EOTech
I'm sorry if I am bringing up an old subject here, but I've been thinking about it for a while (so there is no rush), but I am leaning towards the basic Trijicon 4x32 ACOG TA01 - kind of an all around usefullness addition to a basic Hbar AR15 in .223 (removable handle). Not that cost is not a factor but I have been trying to get things that are not temperamental or in need of constant care (or heck, just in need of batteries ...). Don't want bells and whistles just good, solid, reliable quality - that kind of thing has value to me. EOTech seems to be the other name that keeps cropping up - are there any others that I should consider?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Two very different sighting systems. It depends if you want magnification or a red dot for close in allowing the use of both eyes and a very fast combat target acquistion. You do have to pay additionally for a magnifyer. Personally, with my 49 year old eyes, I went with a detachable mount and a compact 1.5-4.5x scope. The lower setting still allows the use of both eyes for up close, with having the option of more magnification if needed. With the detachable mount I can have quick access to the irons. Also I plan to add a laser sight for close in low light conditions. This seems to be the best option for me. hth.

If you want a magnified optic then the ACOG is good-to-go.
If you're considering a red dot sight I would go with an Aimpoint rather than an Eotech. The Aimpoints have much greater battery life and in my experience, both personally and from what I've read on line, greater reliability.
The Eotech reticle is nicer than the simple Aimpoint dot, but my choice is Aimpoint.

Red dot style, I have had a 1X24 Reflex for almost 8 years. No batteries, just fiber optics and tritium. Takes a licking...JMHO

Thanks guys,
I appreciate the comments and input. My LEO buddy is a huge fan of the EO Tech but I am leaning towards the ACOG for my uses which (hopefully) will lean more towards distance rather than quick acquisition.
Worst case scenario, whatever I don't get this time around, well I'll just have to get the other one next year ... (grin).

What Stevo said. For long range ACOGs are superb. For close in work, they suck.
EoTechs tend to eat batteries and die, sometimes spectacularly at the wrong time. I've had several friends have them shut off mid firefight.
I'm an "Aimpoint *****", i used the M68 (Comp M2) for 3 years on one battery under every weather condition (day, night, 135F to -12F, sand storms, snow, rain, hail) and they keep running.
I have and will continue to trust my life to Aimpoints. Eotechs.....I have a few for evaluational purposes, but I don't really trust them.

Well, now I guess maybe I need both ...
Hell of a recommendation - thanks. That is the kind of input I was looking for. My LEO buddy here has a lot of 'personality' behind his opinions - makes it kinda hard to argue with him (even though we've known each other since we were 8 ... and I don't think either of us have changed a bit - we're both just as stubborn as ever ...). To be fair, when he thinks about optics on any platform he is thinking from a SWAT point of view and is not really a distance type of shooter.
But now I do have another short barreled AR with a collapsable stock ... hmmmmm (grin).
Thanks again, all.

I used the ACOG Reflex on my SWAT AR for years. Great entry weapon!
