Received a 7.27 Mil Winchester

I didn't believe the serial that CMP posted when they shipped my order, so I didn't post anything at the time. But I got the delivery today. Its a Winchester hand-stamped M-1 carbine, serial 7277852, complete with certificate from CMP. This serial is higher than any other Winchester M-1 carbine I have found posted on any of the forums. Please someone tell me they have one higher.

Its definitely a rack grade (the inland stock is firewood) and it looks like its been rode hard and put up wet. MW is still only a 2. I have it broken down for cleaning and filling out the data sheet. These pics will have to do for now. I did find some damage inside the chamber, so I will have to get it checked before I can shoot it.

Anyone know where I can get an affordable Winchester stock so I can burn this piece of Inland firewood?


UPDATE: Looked at it again... it may not be a handstamp - did they roll-stamp that high block?

That's a pretty high number 7.2, congratulations! They do not come around very often. It appears to be original finish. I have 7259xxx and it has several M2 parts to include the slide, trigger housing, sear, and mag catch. Also most if not all 7.2 Winchesters have the type 2 adjustable sight. Another trait is while the barrel has the Winchester proof mark in a circle, most if not all barrels in this range are not W marked behind the front sight. Nice snag.

PS: How is the type 3 barrel band and safety marked?

Also, when searching for a correct Winchester stock, it should be a type 3 with only the Winchester CC on the right. I would not get caught up in the long channel short channel issue. I spoke with Martin McVey on this issue, a noted expert on Winchester carbines and asked him to check his late Winchesters. He state there was no rhyme or reason and both styles were present on his late Winchesters. Mine has the short channel, however the wrist area feels as if it were on steroids. It's absolutely more thick than any other Winchester I own.

Tired, you did GOOD on that 7 series. And that is a high number. I got one pretty close at 7263327. I understand that ANY 7 series Winny is fairly uncommon. Hope you can snag some wood. I'll look out in the woodpile for you.

I'm envious, I'm still looking for a 7.2-7.3 million Winchester, my highest carbine is a 7.1 million Inland.

I had seen a list a while back of known carbines that showed only two Winchester's with serial numbers higher then yours.

I only have about half the data sheet done (got to work to feed the kids ya know). Right now the trigger housing (type VI) and all of its parts are Winchester. The bolt is a Win but it is a flat type II - unfortunately the bolt components are mixmasters.

Here's some questions for the group:

1) What is the correct type bolt for this block? I am guessing a round bolt, but I don't know if Winchester had enough or just used what they had left over at the end of production.

2) Did Winchester "collect" extra parts left over from other manufacturers at the end of production? Would this explain some of the other parts inside the bolt...

3) What would be the correct slide? It has a well-worn AOB type III slide, but I assume that it is a definite replacement somewhere along the lines.

Guess I am going to have to put some extra money out on this one, so I might as well make it count...
