Colt Manual No. CM101 M16A1 Rifle Operation and Maintenance
TM 9-1005-249-24&P ---- (US Army) M16
and M16A1
TM 05538C-23&P/2 ------ (USMC) M16A2
All oldish, but except possibly for the Colt manual, relatively easily available, I should think. The TMs are possibly more info than required at this point, but since you ARE "the Librarian"....

Mike Pannone's book on the M16
family of weapons is a real "handbook" and made for privates/corporal level of general info. While it's written for a grunt, the basic info is sound and it's in an easy to follow format. Only runs about $20.
