If you want it level, single point is out. When I carried a black rifle in the real world, I used an "M60 patrol" sling with the pad ,over the weak side shoulder. Use a snap hook on the front sling swivel,The rear depends on the folding stock you use. A Chaote has a rear sling swivel adjacent on folding stock. With an M1A1icon stock loop it around the top wire between the hinge area and cheek piece. Let it slide back and forth some. When you transition to the carbine, you unfold the stock with the strong hand, while you raise it up with the off-hand (weak hand). With the sling across you this way, you can transition to handgun by rotating the carbine around behind you out of the way.

I have used this method with M16s, Colt Commando, MP5, M1/2 carbine, AKM, and even full size FN FAL. I personally don't like single point slings as the weapon flops around too much. If you can't find an M60 patrol sling, an RPK sling (longer and wider than a standard AK sling) works just as well. That is what I use on my IO AKM. I have the padded shoulder piece from a laptop bag slid on the sling for where it contacts the shoulder, which is nicer, because as you slide the weapon/sling around, it slides trough the loop on the back of the pad.

If you are planning on using the M1 carbine as a "serious" PDW, the Choate locks up sturdier, but the M1A1icon stock is much easier to deploy. If it is an original or one of the better repro M1A1s the lock up can be improved. Spring tension can be increased with a lock washer or two to compress it more. That is one thing I did on one I used for an LE trunk gun.
