Dont know how it is called, but Brownells has a good cleaning and polishing compunds and abrasives. I used one of them for an rusty pistol bore and it worked good.

As far as maintenance goes, just clean the bore w/ warm soapy water (or Windex, etc. its not really important as long as its a water based cleaner) before oiling and storing. That will eliminate the salt residue left behind from firing the generally corrosive primed ammo for this weapon.
If it's already a bit rusty, just scrub it out well, follow through w/ the soap and then oil. You can't fix the pitting, but it usually doesn't affect its shootability very much. Muzzle wear is a much worse problem, so clean from the breech end.
As far as lubes go, well, use what you like, but WD40 WILL gum up when left to sit- so not a great choice. Otherwise, feel free to pick your own favorite.
For storage and protection from moisture I REALLY, REALLY like Eez-ox.

I have been using Tetra Gun products and they work great. Its Teflon based (I believe) and supposed to help incr velocities and "smooth" barrel at a microscopic level.

Would cleaning it and then firing some FMJ through it do the trick on the rust and/or pitting and then clean and oil for storage.
