I believe original M/1914 grips were made from white birch which is plentiful in Norway.

That very well could be, as they were much lighter colored than typical walnut. I suppose with an oil finish, and/or years of skin oil that would about do it.

I think these are a pair of Norwegian grips I stumbled upon recently. They have had a dark finish applied a long time ago.
