Nice pair, differnet models as well, note the "oil holes" for those not familiar with the models

Thanks old-smithy, couldn,t walk away from these two, branching out to Patt 1888 and Patt 1903 but only Unit marked ones.

Very nice looking pair, going the unit marked route is a good way to go bankrupt ;-) bad enough with makers and models (think i have about 40 so far and know of at least 3 more makers!)

No unit marks on mine but have all three variations.
Only unit marked one I have is a P07 "hooked quillion marked to the H.L.I.

Picked up a medal group to a Pte in the H.L.I, The South African Medal was issued while in this regiment and WW1 medals issued when he was in the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders. On research i found Extracts of soldiers papers and files, of the same name, an interesting read, but you can get lost when doing the research.
Anyway back to bayonets after most makes of the Patt 1907, i started to look at unit marked ones, so decided on this for the patt 1888, and patt 1903 route.
A lot of nice examples of the Patt 1888, and can still be bought for a reasonable price around £40-£60 in the UK
, expect to pay a bit more for a mark 1, patt 1

Strictly there are more than 3 versions as there are the volunteer ones plus the two official Afghan ones - long and short - and two second pattern ones, as seen above. Interestign ones include the Greener with cleaning holes in both the hilt and the handle, a mix of the two 2nd pattern ones. I've a page dedicated to them with lots of examples including the Afghan ones

Excellent page old-smithy, i guess when you decorate you just move a country or year collection from one room to another.

I wish they were on display, would need an old hotel to have enough rooms lol
and the problem with displaying is do I do it by type or country? or year, or rifle, or........

Are P88's by the maker Mole still able to be found in reasonable condition and at a reasonable price.? I'm still looking for a nice one to complete my set of Mk1,Pt.II. (already have the Efd, Wilk & Sand)
Also what is with the darker grey finish found on some of the later used bayonets.? I have one reissued in '16 that has this darker finish. Is it a refinish.?
