If you do fit a new No5 flash eliminator to the barrel and the taper holes don't align, just file a small flat at the top or bottom bearing surface of the barrel, where the flash eliminator fits, soft solder or tin the mating surfaces of both, heat up and slide on. THEN align to UPRIGHT on a sheet of glass.
It should stay firm forever. I did this when I rebarrelled a friends No5 using a 7.62mm Bren L4 barrel 30 or so years ago. And it's still going strong. In fact, he's using it today!

Not having ever had a No 5 before, I didn't realize the flash hider was an assembly with the front sight, etc. Measuring from the ring at the rear of the handguard to the muzzle is 18". The crown is flat, then beveled into the barrel and beveled on the rim. I did wonder if this was a wartime expedient, or civilian mod. Would this be a cut down barrel? At any rate, at $175 out the door with ~150 rounds of WRA49 dated ammo, I'm very happy with it!! I would be very interested in finding a flash hider assembly if anyone knows where one would be available at a reasonable price.
Thanks to all George
